The WordPress community in Uganda reached a new milestone on March 13th and 14th, 2026. Developers, designers, bloggers, educators and students converged for WordCamp Mukono, centered around a vital theme: Sustainable Growth, Building a Lasting WordPress Future.

For two days, the venue became a high-energy hub of collaboration and innovation. It wasn’t just about code; it was about the people behind the screens coming together to strengthen the local and regional ecosystem. WordCamp Mukono proved once again that the open web stays strong when we share knowledge and support one another. It was evident that WordPress is not only about the blog but everything to do with programming all languages combined in a single space.
Day 1: Inspiration and the Power of Community
The atmosphere on Friday was electric. As registrations opened, the room filled with the sound of old friends reconnecting and new partnerships forming over morning coffee. We had more laughter than a normal comedy show room.
The sessions set a high bar from the start. A standout moment was the workshop on “Generating a WordPress-powered Innovative Business using Design Thinking.” The speaker’s expertise was evident, but it was his ability to break down complex strategies into actionable tools that truly resonated with the audience. Many people have commented about the different sessions that worked for them, you could leave a comment of your favourite session in the comments section below.
Beyond the formal talks, the Contributor Session was a game-changer. It demystified the process of giving back, showing attendees how to contribute to WordPress Core, Photos where we had so many people have their first contribution and also earned their first badge, Polyglots as well with many people translating to Luganda and having their translations acted upon, and Training. We even saw beginners move from “curious” to “capable,” building their very first WordPress sites from scratch using the WordPress Playground.

Day 2: Designing for Longevity
Saturday doubled down on the momentum. We moved from “how-to” sessions into deeper discussions about the future of web technologies. Development, Debugging, Mentorship, ground breaking were the most heard themes.
Workshops challenged us to think about sustainability in a literal sense: How do we write cleaner, more efficient code? How do we build businesses that provide responsible services? For the many first time attendees in the room, the take away was clear: WordPress is far more than software it is a global movement built on a shared purpose.
The Highlight of the Day
My highlight of the day was A senior 3 student that got to know about WordPress on her own, researched about it, requested for permission from the guardian and applied as volunteer. And on arrival even though sponsored, assumed full roles of a volunteer and was involved fully in the event. This is unmatched energy. Jemimah was very excited when she was noticed, not only by the organizing team but by the volunteer and Sponsor teams.

A Community in Bloom
WordCamp Mukono has grown into a cornerstone of the Ugandan tech calendar. We saw a beautiful cross-section of society: students launching their first digital projects side-by-side with veteran developers sharing advanced architecture.
The “hallway track”, those spontaneous conversations between sessions was where the magic happened. Ideas for new startups were scribbled on napkins, and mentorships were born. Speakers like Isaac Odong and his session Key Note – How to Attract, Close, Sell, and Retain Cliets as a Web/ App Developer using AI were a great match for a key note. The session left heads nodding and jaws dropping.
